Our national home builder survey provides timely and accurate new home market trends with national and regional data plus metro commentary. We’ve been surveying builders since June 2008 and our typical sample is 33% public homebuilders and 67% private builders.

All of our surveys are delivered via email with a short summary, and are posted in our client portal for easy access. Every month, here’s what you can expect in the Burns Home Builder Survey:

New Home Sales

We analyze on year-over-year and month-over-month new home sales trends, combined with community count changes, and calls out current drivers and differences by buyer segment.

Single-Family Starts

We compare single-family starts trends year-over-year and month-over-month and addresses shifts in builders’ strategies that impact starts rates, in addition to comparisons to the Census Bureau’s releases.

New Home Price Trends

The direction of prices month-over-month captures shifts in builders’ pricing power, while the change in prices year-over-year demonstrates the scale of price appreciation.

Buyer Segments

We compare selected metrics for builders focused on first-time/1st move-up buyers versus those focused on 2nd move-up/luxury buyers for similarities or differences.

Questions of the Month

These varying questions provide insights on timely topics, such as build cycle times, construction costs, migration impacts on demand, and home sales to investors.

Other Standard Metrics

We monitor cancellations, finished inventory, and sentiment-based traffic and expected sales ratings that suggest short-term and 6-month sales outlooks.
