Current Conditions

  • Continued softness in big-ticket discretionary purchases due to weaker consumer sentiment from elevated interest rates
  • Higher replacement of appliances from reduced product lifespan due to increased usage from working from home. Appliance replacement demand drives approximately 60% of industry volumes, specifically cooktops, ovens, and ranges.
  • Manufacturers have resumed promotions and incentives to increase consumer demand following over two years of limited promotions during Covid.

Demand Outlook

  • 9.2 million units installed in 2024 (+1% YOY)
  • We expect stronger demand from new construction in mid- to late-2024 due to stronger housing starts in 2023 and early 2024. Appliances are typically installed six to nine months after a housing start.
  • Rate buydowns and quick-move-in homes supported 2023 new home sales. While builders are starting more homes per community in early 2024, significant land constraints are limiting the expansion of active communities, according to our monthly Builder Survey.
