Study on Adoption of Industrialized Construction Technologies (including Prefab) in New Home Construction

Overview

Services Offered
  • Market Study

Objective

Building products manufacturer needed to understand adoption (measured as share of housing starts) of industrialized construction technologies/prefabricated components in US housing for their internal planning purposes.

Approach and Solution

  • The study estimated the share of housing starts that used major prefabricated components using proprietary and publicly available data. We determined the adoption rate for 12 major industrialized construction technologies/prefab components

  • We studied the housing markets and major prefab component manufacturers in Japan and Sweden to estimate adoption of prefabricated components in new construction and factors that drove adoption. We studied specific periods when the housing market in Sweden went through a downturn to understand how the prefab component manufacturers sustained themselves through lean periods.

  • We analyzed US housing markets to understand underlying factors that could influence demand for prefab components

  • We highlighted markets in the US that shared attributes with overseas markets that had high adoption rates, and therefore could be markets where prefab adoption trends higher than the national average
“Thank you for the comprehensive report and deliverables.” – Director of Innovation

Impact

Client now has a better understanding of US markets where industrialized construction/prefab technologies are more likely to find adoption, based on trends in key factors. Client can plan its investments to better align with expected future trends in prefab adoption by market.
